STRENGTHENING THE SCHOOL LITERACY MOVEMENT

Reading enables people to open the world’s horizon by gaining knowledge and leading to themastery of science and technology. When the people of a country like to read and make it ahabit, it will lead to the advancement and development of the country itself. Unfortunately,Indonesian people still has a low reading interest. This study aimed is to find out the progress ofschool literacy movement’s implementation in senior secondary school level, and to formulateways in strengthening the literacy movement. The study used qualitative approach. The datawas collected through a focus group discussion with teachers in six different provinces assamples, amounted to 72 teachers in total. The results showed that 1) several schools haveimplemented the school literacy movement by allocating 15 mins reading time before lessonstarts, and 2) the activities in the implementation of school literacy movement includespreparation, implementation, and follow-up. In conclusion, the school literacy movement insenior secondary school level hasn’t been run optimally and therefore strategic steps areneeded to reach a more optimal result.
